Renee Good was found with gunshot wounds to the chest, arm and head after a federal immigration officer shot her the morning of Jan. 7, according to the Minneapolis Fire Department’s incident report.

There were two gunshot wounds on Good’s right chest, one on her left forearm and one “with protruding tissue on the left side of the patient’s head” the report said. Blood was flowing out of her left ear.

In addition to being shut out from the federal investigation, state authorities said they were denied access to evidence collected — like shell casings, witness interviews and the car that Macklin Good was driving when she was shot.

Last week, in response to the lack of access, Moriarty and the state attorney general's office announced a joint effort to gather evidence and asked Minneapolis residents to submit evidence that could potentially be used in a state investigation.

But without key pieces of evidence like Good's car, former prosecutor Sweasy believes it will be difficult for an investigation to result in charges. She noted that it is generally challenging to prosecute law enforcement officers in use-of-force cases.

[Former federal prosecutor] Ramirez from Northeastern University suggested that state authorities could also subpoena evidence withheld by the FBI. She added that time is of the essence, warning that the longer the state waits to launch an official investigation, the harder a probe will become.

"You need to begin talking to people before their memories fade. You need to begin analyzing the evidence before it becomes tainted," Ramirez said.

The Justice Department said there is not enough evidence to back a criminal investigation into the actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who shot and killed Renee Good.

“There is currently no basis for a criminal civil rights investigation,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement.

Blanche’s statement is the clearest indication that federal investigators are not examining the conduct of the ICE officer, while also blocking local authorities from using their jurisdiction to investigate the shooting.


Поначалу говорилось о том, что расследованием занялось ФБР, которое подчиняется руководству DOJ, и на этом основании утащило к себе все улики. Что тогда может иметь в виду бывший адвокат Трампа в деле Сторми Дэниелс, назначенный первым заместителем генерального прокурора, когда он говорит об отсутствии достаточных оснований для расследования? Может, он ждет не дождется, когда их станет достаточно, может, я чего-то не понимаю в иерархиях следователей и прокуроров, может, я не улавливаю разницу между "криминальным" и каким-то еще расследованием убийства.

Upd. По-видимому, Бланш просто говорит, что он не хочет, чтобы расследованием занимался отдел DOJ Civil Rights Division, а слова про "отсутствие оснований" — для солидности.


Параллельно вице-президент Вэнс, ссылаясь на твит CBS, который ссылается на неких анонимных официальных лиц, которых неизвестные люди поставили в известность о состоянии здоровья агента ICE, торжествующе провозглашает:

"While much of left has lied about this case, it turns out ramming a law enforcement officer with a car causes injuries. Who knew!"

Казалось бы, почему бы Вэнсу не сослаться напрямую на своих подчиненных или на то заключение врачей, если он существует, с которым они, предположительно, были ознакомлены? Зачем нужна эта загогулина через прирученную телекомпанию CBS?

Единственное объяснение, которое приходит в голову: Вэнс считает, что официальным заявлениям в этом деле мало кто поверит.
